state but in wisconsin, indiana, and michigan. it supports a million -- a multimillion-dollar fishing industry foreign the local industry, and it's beautiful. it is a recreational asset for swimming, kayaking, boating or just taking a walk along the beach. it is just a gorgeous lake. i always look forward to getting up to the chicago. we have a condo that overlooks lake michigan that i consider to be a great place to sit and just look at this beautiful lake and what happens on it whith a drinking a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. but, unfortunately, the health of our great lake michigan is threatened every summer when a coal-burning fe ferry boat dumps tons of coal into the lake all summer long. meet the s.s. badger. many people have fond memories of this boat steaming from ludington, michigan. but they need to be reminded of one thing. the s.s. badger is the last coal-fired ferry in the united states and there is reason it's the last one. every year based on the estimates given to us by the company

he spent 21 months recuperating from his wounds in an army hospital in michigan. there he met a lifetime friend, future majority leader bob dole, another young g.i. who had been also wounded in the european theater. senator dole told senator inouye he planned to go to law school and eventually serve in congress. dan inouye was elected to congress in 1959 as hawaii's first congressman. bob dole was elected to congress a year later. senator inouye always joked, i went with the dole plan and i beat him. three years later, dan inouye was elected to the senate and he's been a soft and powerful voice for the people of hawaii ever since. although senator inouye was an unabashed progressive democrat, he always put his country first and his party second. dan was a vibrant and vital presence in the senate and in death he'll remain a legend. his last words on earth, aloha. and it is with a heavy heart that i and we bid aloha, goodbye, i love you to a friend and legend of the senate, daniel ken inouye. >> good morning. on behalf of the united states house of representatives,

i am pleased to yield one minute to the gentleman from michigan, mr. peters. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman from michigan is recognized for one minute. mr. peters: mr. speaker, i rise in opposition to this rule and the underlying bills. in the dead of the night, five days before christmas, house republicans released legislation that they are rushing to the floor to gut funding for health care, food assistance and other vital social services. christmas is a season of giving, but sadly republicans are taking. taking food off the table from millions of americans that are struggling in these tough economic times by cutting food assistance by $36 billion. taking the unemployment lifeline away for more than two million americans who are trying to get back on their feet. and taking funding away from block grants that provide services for abused children. and why would they insist taking so much away from families during this holiday season? so they can give an average $50,000 tax break to millionaires. i urge my colleagues to stand up for millions of children

the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman from michigan. mr. levin: i ask unanimous consent to revise and extend my remarks. the speaker pro tempore: without objection. mr. levin: i did not know i would follow the distinguished majority leader. i just want to say -- and i also want to talk about plan c -- br for he or anybody else to come on the floor and say the president hasn't proposed spending cuts, it isn't true and it undercuts the necessary level of trust to find common ground. that kind of a statement should not be made. i sat in the rules committee for three hours, participated for two last night. there was no reference to plan c, and it came up just a few minutes secretly before midnight. the purpose of plan c is to try to get votes for plan b within the republican conference. and what it does is to undermine the affordable care act by eliminating the protections and the joint task committee said it would result in a loss of health insurance coverage for 420,000 people. it would repeal the block grant, the social services block grant,

if the president can get on air force one and go to michigan and do a rally with union members talking about right to work, then i think the commander in chief can take the time to get involved and get this marine home. we live with a very simple maxim in the military. we leave no man behind. i think the president of the united states of america should not depart washington, d.c. if jon hammmar is not going home. >> gretchen: do you believe that jay carney, when he said he didn't know about it, that he didn't actually know about it, or that he wanted to rethink how he was going to answer the question and get back to the reporter? >> either up with is bad -- either one is bad. if you don't know about it, that's unconscionable. if you're trying to play games with the life this marine -- this is despicable, this picture of him chain to do a cot. this is a war veteran, someone giving to give the last full measure of devotion to this country in iraq and afghanistan. we have an administration that has seemingly turned its back on him. i think everyone should be calling the white house right
